ARTISTS ANONYMOUS
and
ALLISON SCHULNIK
At their first show in Italy Artists Anonymous, Berlin and London-based collective, present a site-specific installation which invites the viewer to enter a surreal environment, where positive and negative images, typical of the photographic process, confront and dialogue with each other. Distinctive feature of their artistic research, the positive/negative duality, through the juxtaposition of a negative painting and its positive photographic counterpart, aims to unveil the complexities and ambiguities of perception. What may have escaped to a first vision of the painting is suggested through one of the many possible photographic translations, which does not intend to establish a correct reading of the image but alludes to all its endless possibilites.
The young American painter Allison Schulnik, for her first exhibition in Italy, presents a new body of paintings which disclose the doors of her own intimate imaginery. Drawing from films, music, art history and her dancing and animation skills, Allison Schulnik creates characters which seem to belong to a fantastic otherworld, an almost oniric dimension. Engulfed in thickly-sculpted layers of oil-paint that hardly contains them, these awkward and solitary figures reveal a surprising earthliness: hobo clowns, misshapen animals and alien beasts hide a human quality through which the artist aims to arouse in the observer a profound understanding and compassion for her troupe of cast-offs.
